Jordi Alba- Spain (1st call-up)
Jeremy Mathieu- France (1st call-up)
Adil Rami- France (10 caps)
Ever Banega- Argentina (19 caps)
Mehmet Topal- Turkey (21 caps)
The big news is for Jordi Alba and Jeremy Mathieu. Interestingly enough, both players play the same position. However, as they have both seen lots of minutes in the pitch and both played extremely well, they have earned their call-ups to their national teams. It seems as though Emery’s competitive line-ups have brought out the best in his left backs, as in his goalkeeper position. However, it is harder to break in the goalkeeper position in any national squad, much less when your competition is Julio Cesar (Brazil) and Iker Casillas (Spain). Diego Alves and Vicente Guiata will have to wait for the respective national teams to free up that position. If they both keep playing at the level they are showing now, their managers won’t be able to ignore them for too long.
Rami, Banega and Topal all rejoin their national teams. Rami will be with Mathieu to start France’s new generation of players, hoping to erase the bad memory of the last World Cup, where France humiliated themselves. Banega will return to Argentina hoping to forget his bad performance in last summer’s Copa America with strong showings against Chile and Venezuela. Both matches which will prove to be real tests for the Albiceleste. Topal is still recovering from a shoulder injury, but the Turks will be hoping to count on him for the upcoming friendlies this weekend, though Unai Emery will hope Topal sees little playing time as possible for fear of another injury. All in all, it should be an interesting international break. Amunt Jordi and Mathieu, may they receive their first caps in style!
