The Gunners took a tough blow on Saturday
against Sunderland at The Stadium of Light, dropping their second straight
match. Falling 2-0, Arsenal faced their second shutout of the week—their first
coming at the hands of A.C. Milan, who put up four unanswered goals on Wednesday.
With this loss, Arsenal find themselves out of the FA cup in the fifth round. To add to their woes, being 17 points behind
table leader Manchester City, Arsenal will see their seventh consecutive season
without a trophy.
After the defeat in Italy, Arsene Wenger
promised to shake up his roster and it turned out to be a promise kept. Lukasz
Fabianski, Francis Coquelin, Johan Djourou, Gervihno, and Oxalde Chamberlin all
got to start, but the moves the skipper made would come back to haunt him. Sunderland’s left winger Kieran Richardson would score the match’s first goal
with 40 minutes gone by, but the game’s second score would turn out to be the
games most intriguing as Oxalde Chamberlin would score an own goal that would
seal the victory for his team’s opponent. With the Arsenal out of the chase for
the cup, their focus now is on the Premier League. Arsenal’s next match will be
Sunday, the 26th against Tottenham Hotspur.
