America Fall to Monterrey

America faced off against Monterrey this past weekend at the Estadio Azteca, home of Las Aguilas.  Hoping to win the game at home and to put their fans on their feet, America came out with their heads held high after last week’s loss.  Unfortunately, America was unable to put their losing ways behind them.

The game started off with Monterrey taking control of the ball and the game itself for the first 15 minutes of the game.  However, America was not going to let the them get away with it.  Christian Benitez scored for America at minute 19, taking the lead  early in the first half of gameplay.  That did not last long though, one minute into the second half, Humberto Suazo scored for Monterrey, tying up the highly contested match.

Christian Benitez was on a roll!  He scored the second goal for America at minute 57.  This goal was criticized during the game since it seemed he pushed one of the players out of the way to be able to head the ball into the goal, but referees made no comment and counted it as a goal for the team.  America’s lead was nullified when Monterrey player Abraham Dario CarreƱo tied the game 2-2 at minute 85.

The game was given 10 minutes of overtime due to a seven minute loss of game time when the camera that flies above the field fell off one of the cables and was inches off the ground.  With a 2-2 tie and 10 minutes left of the game, both teams kicked it into high gear.  As I watched the last 10 minutes and saw Benitez near the goal once again I was euphoric and could almost taste victory.  Unfortunately, one of the linesmen called off the play.  Monterrey took control of the ball and with six minutes left in the game, Angel Reyna scored the game winning goal, putting Monterrey up 3-2.

It was a heartbreaking match for America players and fans alike.  If the camera had not malfunctioned it seems that America would have at least gotten one point from the tie.  Despite a loss, much good can be taken away from this match—America created many chances around goal and finished their opportunities.  It simply appears that luck was against them this week.  America will look to find victory as they face off against Chivas de Guadalajara on April 8th.
