Liverpool 1:1 Aston Villa
Herd (10'), Suarez (82')
Liverpool faced another
relegation-threatened club on Saturday as they took on Aston Villa at Anfield.
The Reds were undoubtedly on edge, having lost to both Wigan and QPR.
If Liverpool's confidence was
low before, the loss of Pepe Reina in goal certainly didn't help matters, Doni,
whose last appearance in an October friendly lasted only 57 minutes, taking his
place. Doni's anxiety-ridden debut was only made worse in the 10' when he
cleared Warnock's cross awkwardly and allowing Bannan to pass the ball to a
wide open Chris Herd who put Aston Villa on the score-sheet.
Doni makes his
anxiety-ridden Premier League debut.
The Reds slowly came into
fighting form after falling behind, Kuyt, Skrtel, and Suarez all with decent
attempts before the half. Kenny's switch to 4-4-2 in the second half seemed to
be the spark Liverpool needed, with Steven Gerrard nearly scoring an equalizer
in the 53rd minute.
Liverpool finally began to
apply more and more pressure, with Dalglish bringing Andy Carroll, Craig
Bellamy, and Daniel Agger on in an attempt to give the Reds an edge with an
additional 2 forwards. Despite looking far more impressive, Liverpool still
struggled to find the back of the net.
They managed to convert some
of their strife in the 82,' Gerrard's cross finding Agger, whose header hit the
bar only for Suarez to nod in the equalizer. Carroll and Stevie G were both
close to scoring in added time, Shay Given just barely keeping the skipper's
ball out of the net.
Suarez comes to
Liverpool's rescue, scoring the equalizer.
While a full 3 points would
have been a relief to the Reds, and perhaps well-deserved after their
impressive effort after falling behind, a draw is always better than (another)
loss.
Liverpool will be looking to
regain their confidence by Tuesday when they take on Blackburn.
Next Match:
Blackburn Rovers v.
Liverpool. BPL. Tuesday, April 10. 3:00 PM EST.
