Leonel Messi has won the Balón d'or two consecutive times and is looking to make
it three. According to espndeportes.com, 9 more Barcelona players are
in the preliminary round of 50 players chosen to win this award. These players
are Dani Alves, Pique, Puyol, Abidal, Fábregas, Villa, Sanchez and last years
finalists Xavi and Iniesta.
Barcelona is the most well represented with 10 followed by Bayern Munich and Real Madrid with 6 and 5, respectively. Surprising additions to the nominees are Chicharito Hernandez from Manchester United, Sergio Agüero from Man City and Santos' starlet Neymar.
By November 1st the list will be cut to 23 and then to the final 3 by December 5th with the winner ultimately being announced on January 9th in Zurich at the Gala.
