2 out of 3 players on the shortlist for FIFA World
Player of the Year were teammates specifically, Lionel Messi and Xavi of
Barcelona and Cristiano of Real Madrid. All 3 players had an amazing year.
Messi and Xavi helped Barcelona bring in a La Liga trophy, Champions League
Trophy, Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup and a Club World Cup, while
Cristiano had a good year at Madrid breaking the Pichichi record with 40 goals
in a single La Liga season and helped them win the Spanish Copa Del Rey. All 3
players were deemed fit to win this award but only one could. Leo Messi won for
the third consecutive time. He dedicated the award to his teammates, family,
coaches and every one who supported him throughout the most recent season. He
gave much respect to Xavi for helping him win the award and shared it with him
saying the award belonged to both of them.
Another Barcelona man won at the Gala as well. Pep
Guardiola won for Coach of the year. He had stiff competition as he was running
against the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson and the "special one" in
Mourinho. Like Messi, he was glad to share the award with Ferguson and Mourinho
and also gave thanks to his assistant Tito Vilanova.
Barcelona was well represented in the FifPro
Team of the Year with 5 players chosen to share the honor: Alves and Pique for
defenders, Xavi and Iniesta for midfielders and Messi as a striker. The other
players chosen were Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso and Cristiano of
Real Madrid, Nemanja Vidic and Rooney of Manchester United.
