The Red Devils took on Tottenham Hotspur this past Sunday at Whitehart Lane, earning an important three points toward their Premiere League endeavor. The injury plagued Hotspurs, who have surprised the football world and held down third place in the EPL, controlled much of the ball and kept steady pressure on United defense.
Around minute 37 Tottenham’s hard work seemed to pay off; David De Gea palmed a shot away from goal, which allowed Spurs forwards Louis Saha and Emmanuel Adebayor to link up for a goal, which was unfortunately disallowed under the premise of a handball. Moments later, Man United had their first attack on goal. Wayne Rooney headed a goal past Spur’s Brad Fridel following a corner kick from Ashley Young, putting the Red Devils up 1-0 at the stroke of halftime.
Upon the whistle, White Hart Lane was rattling with boos and hissing from Tottenham fans in disapproval of the score line.
After the break, Man U absorbed 15 minutes of intense Hotspur attack only to drive down the pitch and steal a second goal. Following a throw in, Nani pushed the ball across goal which Ashley Young volleyed in gorgeously. No more than 10 minutes later, Young struck the deathblow to Tottenham, curling the ball around a diving Fridel, putting Manchester United up 3-0.
Tottenham were not to go down without a fight despite the mounting score against them. Following a poor back-pass from Ryan Giggs, Jermain Defoe struck a ball which left David De Gea frozen between the posts, lessening United’s lead, 3-1.
The match went on the end at that final score. This match is evidence that quality outshines quantity when it comes to chances on goal. It also showcases United’s class—despite not playing at their best, United capitalized on their few chances, making Tottenham pay for each and every mistake. The Red Devils now sit a mere two points behind EPL leaders Man City and are out to prove they deserve the Title once again.
