This weekend America faced off against Santos in the 15th date of Torneo Clausura 2012. After last week’s victory against Chivas, Las Aguilas stepped out onto their home field with heads held high and fans cheering them on. Not only did they not disappoint their fans by giving them a great game, but they also didn’t disappoint El Piojo, by insuring a spot in La Liguilla with a 3-1 victory!
Las Aguilas wasted no time and quickly took control of the ball, and had no difficulty maintaining control. Santos seemed a bit off, especially in their defense, and America took advantage of the situation. Christian Bermudez scored a goal at minute 38, putting everyone to their feet! However, 14 minutes later, Santos scored the game-tying blow.
The game was tied and America watched as Santos slowly lost their energy and hope for the game. By attacking Santos’ already weak defense, El Chucho Benitez scored the second goal for America at minute 70, and seven minutes later Vicente Vuoso scored the third goal! With this victory, Las Aguilas obtain a total of 28 points and a secured spot for La Liguilla.
Speaking of the Liguilla, team player Jose Maria Cardenas spoke to the press about how the team was preparing for it. He said, “We qualified, and I think that we need to have a good ending to the tournament and we have the same possibilities as every other team at becoming champions.”
I will explain a little about La Liguilla and how a team qualifies. La Liguilla is another tournament that follows the Clausura. In this tournament, the best eight teams out of Clausura are the ones that fight for the title as Champions. With only two games left until the end of Clausura 2012, America is within those eight teams. This upcoming weekend they face off against Puebla, hoping to get more points and be at the top of the list!
