Real Madrid faced Sevilla today at the Santiago Bernabéu, winning
3-nil against the Andalusian visitors.
This now puts los Blancos one
victory away from winning the La Liga title and ten points clear of runner-ups,
and bitter rival, FC Barcelona. However,
if Barça loses tonight against Rayo Vallecano, the men in White can already
claim the title as theirs.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored the opener at the 19' minute
mark when Karim Benzema found him on the left side of the box. The Portuguese international feigned a shot,
committing Sevilla GK Koke to the challenge, before sending the ball to the
back of net. This goal would be his 43rd
in the league. ¡Felicidades, crack!
Sevilla had many opportunities of goal later in the half, notably
by Jesus Navas and Álvaro Negredo, whose attempts sailed over the bar. Both men faced Iker Casillas in one-on-one
situations, which made missing that much more disappointing and furthered their
frustration. It's not to say that los Blancos didn't experience any
blunders or moments of exasperation themselves.
The home side was awarded an indirect free kick within the area
after Fazio nearly lobbed Cristiano's head off with a De Jong-esque high foot
at the 36'. Cristiano took the shot from
12 yards out, only to ruffle a few Sevilla feathers and rattle the frame of the
goal. ¡Qué lastima! Benzema, too,
made a few attempts at the 32' and the 42' minute marks, missing the target on
both counts. Not to worry, the Frenchman
eventually got his goals in the second half.
Madrid doubled its lead in the 48' when Benzema netted a strike
from a clearance by Koke. Apparently one
goal was not enough for this striker.
Benzema earned RM's third and his second of the evening with a diving
header four minutes later at the 52', Sergio Ramos at the assist with a
beautiful cross. Also worthy of note in
this play is Brasilian international, Marcelo, who shot the ball over to Ramos.
Sevilla could not recover after the giant blow los Blancos struck, opting to play a more cautious game, committing
men forward for the remainder of the match.
Doing so allowed Madrid to control the final stages to the match. With that, Real Madrid saw victory and three
points.
The men face Athletic Bilbao in an away match this Wednesday, May 2nd,
at San Mamés. Until then, ¡Hala Madrid!
