Los Blancos
played Getafe tonight in an away match at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, with
Miguel Ángel Pérez Lasa officiating the match.
This would be Madrid's second match in La Liga, and after a frustrating
1-1 draw against Valencia in Jornada 1,
a win was most welcome.  Unfortunately,
things did not turn out that way for the men in white.
After a frustrating start
of the game, Madrid got its groove in the 27th minute when
Pipita Higuaín broke the deadlock.  The
Argentine scored with a left-footed shot from the left side of the six-yard box
to the high center of goal.  Amazing!
Getafe too had opportunities of equalizing minutes later, with Ángel
Lafita and David Abraham, but the attempts were blocked and went wide,
respectively.
Portuguese all-star
Cristiano Ronaldo had a chance of doubling Madrid's lead at the 42'.  However, the shot was saved in the bottom
right corner.  Shame.  German wunderkind
Mesut Özil was at the assist.  Two
minutes later at the 44', Cristiano won a freekick, with Getafe's Juan Valera
receiving a yellow for the foul.  Nothing
came from the FK and the team went into descanso
with a mere one-point lead over their opponents.
Getafe shook things up right
after the break, scoring their equalizer at the 53'.  It was a set piece, Real Madrid's
weakness.  It would be the duo of Abdel
Barrada and Valera that robbed Iker Casillas of his clean sheet.  Lo
siento, San Iker.
Karim Benzema came on for
Lass Diarra at the 59' and not a minute later he was making his presence known
on pitch.  The Frenchman attempted a shot
for goal in the 60', only to have it blocked.
But Benzema's footie skills were not the only thing drawing
attention.  Perhaps it was the feisty
attitude and confrontation with Getafe's Alexis?  Nevertheless, he did well to take chances on
behalf of his team.
Getafe pulled ahead in
the 75', Barrada scoring with a left-footed shot to the top right corner,
Adrián Colunga at the assist following a fast break.  Iker Casillas did not look pleased with his backline, who essentially left him to his
own devices and defences.  No one, I
mean, no one, marked Barrada.
The evening went from bad
to worse for Real Madrid.  They were
already behind and during the +4 minutes of added time, Fábio Coentrão – who was
sitting on bench, mind you – was shown a straight red for speaking out of
turn.  The Portuguese man was expulsed
from the bench and Madridistas watched on as he headed for the locker
rooms.  The whistle blew and the
nightmare was over, but the sentiment of disappointment and despair lingered.
Los Blancos face
Barça next in the 2nd leg of the Supercopa.  The match will take place in the Santiago
Bernabéu this Wednesday, August 29th.  Mateu Lahoz will be officiating the
match.  Until then, keep calm and ¡Hala Madrid!
