It's almost here, the
moment we have all been waiting for....the return of La Liga. After a summer of
withdrawal, well there was the Euro Cup to get us through, the wonderful world
of football returns this weekend and Atlético de Madrid is certainly ready.
After a summer of vacationing, touring and training in South America, and
training in Spain, the players are ready to return to the Vicente Calderón.
During the summer
transfer window, Atleti has made a few changes to their lineup. A few cherished
players have left, but Atleti has picked up some great new ones for the
2012-2013 season. Atleti lost starting defender Álvaro Domínguez to the German
club, Borussia Mönchengladbach. Also, Eduardo Salvio
was sold to Portuguese club, S.L. Benfica, earlier this month.
However,
Atleti has gained three important players for the upcoming season. They have
purchased Daniel “Cata” Diaz, an Argentinean central defender, from Getafe.
Turkish midfielder, Emre Belözoğlu, is also
a new sign for Atleti. The club signed him from one of the top Turkish clubs, Fenerbahçe, though he has also played for Newcastle
United and Internazionale. Atleti has also purchased Uruguayan left winger,
Cristian Rodríguez, from FC Porto.
Los Colchoneros are currently gearing up for their first match of the
season against Levante this Sunday. It is now confirmed that defender Juanfran
Torres will not be playing in that match due to a sprained knee injury he got
while playing for the Spanish national team against Puerto Rico. He is hoping
to be better for the Supercup match against Chelsea on the 31st.
Head coach Diego Simeone
states, "We know the game against Levante is going to be very difficult and
hard." However, El Cholo believes that Atleti has prepared well and is
ready for the challenge against the newly qualified Europa league contenders.
