San Iker and La Sexta

Hola, Madridistas!  Our very own San Iker gave an interview to La Sexta, which will televise his charity match (Partido x la Ilusión) later this month.  The interview covered a broad range of topics, which included his future, José Mourinho, and the team's current situation.

When asked about the future in terms of football, Casillas mentioned that he would like to play football in a more relaxed, much different way.  He also assured that he would not play for a team that would compete against his – our – beloved Real Madrid.  In fact, the 31 year-old stated that he had never considered it an option.  If his hand(s) were forced to leave RM, that is, he hinted that the United States was an option, emphasizing how it is a very different country.  Ultimately Casillas would love to retire at Madrid, but even he is aware of the criticism he is getting.  He pondered what it would be like years later at 37, pondering that his reflexes, at best, would not be like they are now.

As for Madrid's current state having given up so many points?  Casillas candidly stated that the rivals (see: Barça) came out gunning for Real Madrid, hungry for titles after losing the Liga last season.  Casillas believes a comeback is possible.  Real Madrid is going to continue, he stated, that the team would continue to fight, not only for themselves, but for their supporters as well.  The GK touched upon some insight on the club, particularly emphasizing Madrid's legacy and the lessons of never giving up.

When asked as to whether Portuguese coach José Mourinho would be staying with los Blancos, Casillas responded quite politically.  He stated that he has not spoken with the coach about that topic, not knowing anything about Mourinho's decision.  As the interview progressed, he went on to add that both sides were happy and that there were no issues involving the coach and club president, Florentino Perez, as rumor would have it.  As for his thoughts on Mourinho?  The GK lauds the Portuguese man for his professionalism in terms of his expectations of his men, his thorough evaluation of rivals regardless of the competition and their overall ranking.

San Iker delved into his personal life for a bit, in addition to his sudden uptake to social media.  Like most celebrities, he mentioned the price of fame – the lack of privacy due to paparazzi.  He aired his grievances of the difficulties of just being able to leave his home or take a walk undetected and like a regular person.  However, like the man of reason I built him up to be, Casillas understands that these photographers are there to make a living and that is their job.  I suppose this is why the Real Madrid man suddenly took up social media as it does put fans in direct contact with him (or his PR team, whatever).  The 31 year-old said he avoided the networks, but right now, in this day and age, finds it near impossible because it's forced upon you.  His feelings were that you have to be a part of it whether you like it or not.  (Really, Iker?  Seems like you're quite content with taking photos/videos with your iPhone and posting to Facebook to me...)

The interview also covered thoughts on his teammates, the Ballon d'Or, his charity match, and a multitude of other topics.  For more on the interview (in English as it was conducted en español), click here.  Until then, keep calm and ¡Hala Madrid!
