The Football Association has announced Fabio Capello’s resignation as manager for England. After the FA’s board decided to strip Chelsea star John Terry of captaincy, Capello openly criticized them on Italian television. The Italian-born manager tendered his resignation on Wednesday during a meeting with the board.
The FA responded with a statement reading:
"The Football Association can confirm that Fabio Capello has today
resigned as England manager. This follows a meeting involving FA chairman David
Bernstein, FA general secretary Alex Horne and Fabio Capello at Wembley
Stadium.
The discussions focused on the FA board's decision to remove the England
team captaincy from John Terry, and Fabio Capello's response through an Italian
broadcast interview. In a meeting for over an hour, Fabio's resignation was accepted and he will
leave the post of England manager with immediate effect."
It appears that the FA has lined up Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp
as Capello’s successor. Redknapp,
after receiving a not guilty verdict in a highly publicized tax evasion case, was
offered the vacant managerial spot.
Despite the once in a lifetime offer from the FA, the 64-year old
Redknapp commented, “I've not even thought about it. I've got a job to do. I've
got a big game on Saturday for Tottenham.” With Euro 2012 quickly approaching,
the FA will need to find a suitable replacement for Capello who lead the Three
Lions to 28 wins, eight draws, and six defeats. Only time will tell!
