If you know soccer, then you must know how hard it is to get
back in the game after a 3-0 deficit.
This was the case for Manchester United as they faced Chelsea on Sunday.
United has not been able to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge
since April 20, 2002. It seemed
like this time it wouldn't be any different. The Reds seemed to be heading for
a heavy defeat after the 50th minute when the third Chelsea goal was scored.
In the first half the lead was given to
Chelsea after Daniel
Sturridge crossed a ball which hit United's Jonny Evans in the 36th minute,
causing an own-goal. In the second
half on the 46th minute of play Juan Mata scored on a one-timer volley from a
cross. Four minutes later, David Luiz scored a header
assisted by Rio Ferdinand's free kick.
By this time Chelsea felt they had victory secured.
In the 58th minute, Wayne Rooney scored a penalty after Sturridge fouled
Patrice Evra. Rooney's second goal was also a penalty in the 69th minute
following Branislav Ivanovic’s foul on Danny
Welbeck. The reds were back in the game.
Javier Hernandez (el Chicharito) came off the bench to do what he does
best. With six minutes to go in the match, Chicharito scored a header on a
cross from Ryan Giggs. This was an epic comeback by the Reds.
Sir Alex Ferguson stated, "It was a
terrible start after half-time and it's not easy to come back from three down.
It was a massive effort from our players."
“It’s not easy coming back from 3-0 down
and it’s a massive effort by our players – but I thought we were the far better
team to be honest. Villas-Boas (Chelsea's boss) also had some remarks as the
result was quite difficult to swallow. "Of course it feels like a defeat.
It isn't easy to take. It's a massive recovery from United."
“It's a disappointment for us. We had it in our
hands and let it slip away."
As we all know Chicharito has been dry of goals
for a couple of months before the Manchester City game. But this time Ferguson gave some praise
to the player stating that he probably should have let him in the whole game.
“To be honest, I think maybe I should have
played Hernández from the start…When he came on he just kept them on their
toes. Danny Welbeck was going to be a top player but when Hernández came on in
the second half he changed the game.”
Despite
the exciting comeback, United dropped to number 2 in the Premier League
allowing Manchester City, who defeated Fulham on Saturday.
