The Blues played an outstanding match against
The Spurs and won it with nothing short of style. With their impressive 5-1 rout over
the Spurs, the Blue crew secured their 4th FA cup final since the
opening of the new Wembley, setting up a match against Liverpool on May 5th.
The first half initially was dominated by the away team and it seemed as if
deadlock would have to be broken until after intermission, but just three
minutes before the half, Didier Drogba would score the game’s first goal with a
trademark strike, which flew past Carlo Cudicini. Not long after the clock
started again after the half, it would be Juan Mata that would give our boys in
blue the 2-nil advantage with a rather controversial strike but nevertheless
the replays would be inconclusive and the goal would count.
The Spurs, however,
were not going down easy and refused to be shut out. Tottenham’s winger, Gareth
Bale, would score into any empty net after teammate Emmanuel Adebayor had
rounded Petr Cech. As you can tell so far, the second half of the match turned
out to be quite entertaining from the get go. The game would go on, but
this time it would be the home team that displayed dominance as Chelsea took complete control over the match. Brazilian midfielder, Ramires Santos do
Nascimento, who was having a superb game throughout, would give the blue jerseys
a two goal advantage again in the 77th minute, finishing off a smart
pass from Mata, who added the assist to his one goal performance already.
It seemed as if everybody on the field for Chelsea were taking turns scoring.
Frank Lampard took his turn to score in form of an exquisite free kick with
just ten minutes remaining until the whistle, but it would be
Florent Malouda who scored a mere nine minutes later and delivered the definite crushing blow past Cudicini. Skipper
Roberto Di Matteo had this to say about his team’s superb performance,
"Our team played very well today, it was a great performance by the whole team."
As to the controversy surrounding Juan Mata’s second half goal, when questioned Di Matteo stood by his opinion in
this statement,
"I spoke about the consistency of using goalline technology in my press conference before the game and I'm still of the same opinion."
Controversy or not, Chelsea certainly put on
a show and demonstrated that they were the better team and pulled a victory that
will not soon be forgotten by Blues fans and has a left a very bitter memory
for The Spurs.
Chelsea’s next match will be a highly contested match again
powerhouse and Messi lead Barcelona, April 18th.
