Like many players who have transitioned to coaches or managers of the team they once played for, Roberto Di Matteo
saw success on the field as the man calling the shots from the bench. At 41, Di Matteo was assigned as Chelsea’s
interim first – team coach with 11 weeks left in the season. The decision could not have come sooner. He would go on to lead the blue jerseys to
their historic first Champions League title, a win over Bayern Munich in
penalty shootouts taking the shootout 4-3 after tying 1-1 in regular time. The Chelsea Organization has rewarded Di
Matteo with a two-year contract extension in addition to permanently naming him
manager and first-team coach. The
Italian native returned to Stamford Bridge to finalize his extension. He had the following to say in regards to his
extension and newly appointed duties:
"I'm obviously delighted to have been appointed as manager and first-team coach. We all achieved incredible success last season that made history for this great club. Our aim is to continue building on that and I'm already planning and looking forward to the squad's return for pre-season."
It rests on Di Matteo to return
the English club to the prominence it demonstrated upon his takeover. Only this time, he has a chance to prove
Chelsea can dominate throughout the 12/13 season and win the Champions League
back-to-back.
