The Mexican National Soccer Team played against Gabon
today in what became the team's second Olympic game and first Olympic
victory. With Giovanni Dos Santos scoring the nation's two goals, Mexico
moves up as leader of Group B in the Olympic Games.
The Mexican side remained in control for majority of the match as Gabon merely seemed to wait for an error by the tri-color team to exploit. With the Mexicans unable to even get a mere shot close of goal, in addition to Gabon's inability to possess the ball long enough to score,
the first half ended an unsettling nil-nil.
Giovanni Dos Santos was put in during the second half
of the game, taking Nestor Vidrio's spot on pitch. Dos Santos wasted no
time in taking possession, letting Gabon know that Mexico was there
for the win. At minute 63, Dos Santos lit up the board for El Tri, giving the team the boost it needed to win the game. The only
problem that manifested occurred towards the end of the second half. The Mexican side, eager to score again, led to many errors while passing
the ball.
Just when it seemed that the game would end with
Mexico at 1 and Gabon at 0, a penalty was called on Oribe Peralta after Gabon
player Henri Ndong knocked him over. At minute 92, Dos Santos converted the penalty into a 2-0 victory for his team. With Mexico now at the top
of Group B, it will face off against Switzerland this Wednesday August
1st. Until then!
