Chicago Fire 1- Rolfe (36')
San Jose Earthquakes 1- Lenhart (90'+8)
San Jose Earthquakes 1- Lenhart (90'+8)
Despite a goal from Chris Rolfe and a career-high 10 saves
from Sean Johnson, the Fire were unable to keep the San Jose Earthquakes at bay
as they drew 1-1.
The Fire and Earthquakes played in a high opportunity
back-and-forth first half which tested both Sean Johnson and Jon Busch in front
of their posts. The 21st
minute brought a venomous volley from San Jose’s Simon Dawkins in the box which
was expertly palmed away by Sean Johnson.
The Fire responded minutes later with a volley of their own from
Brazilian Alex which Busch managed to push away and keep the scores level.
After a 10-minute cold period from the Fire, Patrick Nyarko
fed a give-and-go ball to Chris Rolfe who toe-poked the ball perfectly over the
outstretched Busch and into the net.
Sean Johnson kept his side clear of the ‘Quakes time after
time with majestic saves— another save came in the 59th minute from
the head of Alan Gordon which he slapped away and out of danger. The Fire nearly doubled their lead when
Dominic Oduro nearly struck home from 30 yards out with a chip shot, just
hitting the wrong side of the upper 90.
Jon Busch kept the ‘Quakes in the game late in the game when
he deflected a point-blank rip from Logan Pause which was set up from newly acquired
Dutchman Sherjill MacDonald.
In the 93rd minute, Alan Gordon was sent packing
after a rough tackle on Dan Gargan. With
an abnormally long amount of stoppage time, 10-man San Jose turned on the
afterburners and kept their offensive strike going.
The Earthquakes struck even at the 98th minute
when MLS All-Star Chris Wondolowski chested a ball a the top of the box to
Steven Lenhart who volleyed the ball to
the far post and past the nearly perfect Johnson.
The Fire will walk away with one point and will be hungry
for three more when they host Toronto FC at Toyota Park August 4.
