Hello, hello,
Madridistas. What a wonderful weekend it
was for los Blancos, wouldn't you
agree? In spite of international week
and in spite of the injuries that threatened to shake madridismo resolve, the men in white did well to keep the faith
alive, clinching an easy 2-0 win over Celta Vigo. A goal from Gonzalo "Pipita"
Higuaín and Cristiano Ronaldo each saw Real Madrid close the gap on Barcelona.
José Mourinho's men
controlled the ball in the opening stages of the match. However, possession and control did not
translate into goalmouth action until the 11' minute mark when Pipita opened
the scoring with a cross from the left-hand side, leaving Celta's Sergio
Álvarez surprised. Los Blancos had a chance of doubling minutes later when Pipita
crossed the ball over to center for Cristiano, but the Madeira man's header
went over the bar. Madridistas cursed in
frustration as the 27-year-old was just outside the six-yard box. ¡Qué
lastima!
Celta began to come alive
as the game went on with Iago Aspas intent on equalizing against Real
Madrid. The reserve team player took
their first shot on goal at the 26' minute mark, but Iker Casillas did well to
stop his finish with a spectacular stretching save. Thank you, San Iker.
Mourinho's side looked
much stronger after descanso, bringing
on Ángel di María for Kaká.
Opportunities continued to present themselves for Real Madrid in the
second half, the most promising of which coming at the 67' minute mark. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to plate for a
penalty kick awarded to Mesut Özil.
Gustavo Cabral got on the wrong side of the German wunderkind inside the area and brought him down with a shove. Cristiano converted the penalty, earning
Madrid's second of the evening.
Real Madrid now sits just
outside the top three of La Liga, moving within five points of league leader –
and bitter rival – FC Barcelona. The men
will play the Champions League next Wednesday, October 24 against Borussia
Dortmund. Their next La Liga match will
be at the Iberostar against Mallorca Sunday, October 28th. And the Copa del Rey is back, with los Blancos playing at the El Collao
against Alcoyano, Wednesday, October 31st. Until then, keep calm and ¡Hala Madrid!
