UEFA honors Cristiano Ronaldo for 100 caps for Portugal

Congratulations are in order for Portuguese all-star Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently racked up an impressive 100 games for his nation.  UEFA officials awarded the Real Madrid man prior to Portugal's latest World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland.  At the mere age of 27, Cristiano is the third youngest player to achieve the milestone behind Lukas Podolski and Kristen Vilkmäe.

Cristiano took to his Facebook and issued the following statement:

"I remember it was on August 20, 2003 against Kazakhstan that I first pulled on the Portuguese jersey in a senior international.  It was one of the most memorable moments of my life and began a journey that I have been proud to make.  I would like to thank everyone who helped me along the way to reaching this milestone.

"As the teams were coming onto the pitch last night the Portuguese fans at the stadium unfurled a banner that read "100 games, the best player in the world."

In his 100 appearances, Cristiano scored 37 goals and is making history with his national team.  Two players currently sit ahead of him in the number of matches played: Luis Figo and Fernando Couto, with 127 and 110 matches respectively.  Furthermore, 11 more international goals will see him surpass Portugal's all-time leading goal scorer, Pauleta (Pedro Miguel Carreiro Resendes).

Congratulations, Cristiano.  Here's to a long career ahead of you filled with success.  Viva!
