Chelsea hosted Manchester United on Wednesday night in the fourth round of England's
Capital One Cup.
Although Manchester had a 3-2 win over Chelsea
on Sunday’s game, today’s game ended in favor of Chelsea. Chelsea will move on
to the quarter-finals.
As expected both teams made significant changes to the
starting line-up for Wednesday’s game.
Chelsea’s Roberto Di Matteo started Cesar Azpilicueta, Oriol Romeu,
Victor Moses, Lucas Piazon and Daniel Sturridge while Manchester had Rafael as
the only player to remain in the starting lineup from Sunday’s game. 10 changes
were made to their teams starting squad including an inexperienced defense.
The first goal was on the 22nd minute of play. Ryan
Giggs scored an easy satisfying goal on the right-hand side of Petr Cech’s net.
Manchester although rocky in the back was a threat every time they moved
forward. Chelsea responded nine minutes later in the 31st minute of
play by defender David Luiz who scored a penalty.
The game seemed to be going back and forth when Chicharito (Javier Hernandez) put United back on top in the 43rd minute of play. Chicarito scored the winning goal on Sunday and has scored in five of the past eight games against Chelsea.
In the 52nd minute Gary Cahill once again leveled
the game with a powerful header for Chelsea.
Manchester United was in control heading towards the win with
only seconds away from the end of regular time. United was confident that they
would take home another 3-2 win. Nani's 59th minute chip seemed to be the
winning goal for United. It was Eden Hazard’s penalty in the 94th
minute of play that took the game into overtime. Hazard’s penalty came after Scott Wootton knocked
over Ramires in the penalty box just seconds before the end of the game.
Seven minutes into extra-time Wootton headed a cross pass
ball towards Chelsea player Daniel Sturridge who took advantage of the mistake
and scored. Scott Wootton, United’s 21-year-old had a fine performance for 80
minutes until some costly mistakes betrayed his inexperience.
Ramires goal in the 116th minute during overtime
seals the win for Chelsea. Four minutes after Hernandez is fouled by
Azpillicueta. Ryan Giggs scores a penalty. In the end Roberto Di Matteo’s
Chelsea gained revenge after their loss on Sunday.
This was the game where United could have proven the point
that they were better than their most consistent challengers in recent years.
Instead Chelsea proved that they could come back after a bad defeat.
The defeat left Ferguson with much to say.
“If you’re winning 3-2 in the final seconds of
the game, then you should see it out,” said United manager Alex Ferguson “We’ve
only got ourselves to blame.”
The next
game for Manchester United will be for the English Premier League on Saturday,
November 3rd 2012 against another top competitor Arsenal.
