Los Blancos
played to a packed Santiago Bernabéu tonight, defeating visitors Real Zaragoza
4-0 to a crowd of 70000 strong.
Argentines Gonzalo "Pipita" Higuaín and Ángel di María gave RM
a strong two-point lead before the break, with Michael Essien and Luka Modric
finishing things off in the second half.
Madrid looked determined
to keep their winning streak in the competition at the start of the match. Pipita opened the score sheet at the 23'
minute mark, attacking from close range when Zaragoza failed to clear Modric's
corner. Zaragoza's GK Roberto did well
to parry Raul Albiol's header from Modric's cross, however, the ball
conveniently fell into Pipita's path from two yards out. What a lucky break for the home side and
Madrid's No. 20.
It would not be long
until los Blancos doubled their
lead. It would take a mere two
minutes. Roberto blocked the Argentine's
initial attempt, only to have the ball fall at his feet once more. Di María would not waste his second chance,
sending the ball into the far corner of net.
Cristiano Ronaldo had a chance of making it 3-0 for the home side at the
27' minute mark, but his shot went wide of the far post. How unfortunate! Nevertheless, Madrid had a lot to be proud of
as they entered descanso 2-0.
The visiting side looked
much stronger in the second half. In
spite of Zaragoza's boldness, Iker Casillas was intent on keeping that clean
sheet. They did manage to get the ball in the back of net by way of Postiga,
only to have the goal disallowed for an offside decision.
Cristiano had another
chance of scoring, but the ball rattled off the bar. What rotten luck! Not to worry, Madridistas. It would be Essien to the rescue four minutes
later at the 89', slotting one in following a counterattack. Never satisfied and hungry for more,
Mourinho's side earned another during stoppage time by way of Midric. The Croatian sent one in to the bottom left
corner as Zaragoza fell apart.
Los Blancos
play Dortmund next in the second leg of Champions League this Tuesday, November
6th. Their next La Liga
fixture will be against Levante in an away match at the Ciudad de Valencia. Until then, ¡Hala Madrid!
