Seven points from
seven games. An 8-2 defeat at Old Trafford and a stinging loss in the first North London Derby of the season. Already, Arsenal’s Premier League season looks hopeless.
But cheer up, Gooners, there’s a lot more to life than just the Premier League.
Remember the FA Cup? It’s the oldest continually contested domestic cup competition in the world and the most prestigious cup competition in England. The last time Arsenal reached the FA Cup final was in 2005 when they held off a resurgent Manchester United team for 120 minutes to eventually win on penalties.
That FA Cup was the last trophy Arsene Wenger led
Arsenal to lift. Since then, Arsene Wenger has arguably shifted focus to the Premier League and Champions League, and only flirted with success in any competition. This season, with the Premier League and Champions League out of reach, Arsenal can finally focus on the competition in which it has the second best record. Manchester United have won 11 FA Cups, Arsenal are right behind with 10. It would be nigh on impossible to match their league record, but it would be possible to match them in the cup.
Arsenal and Arsene Wenger have a history of winning
trophies. This season’s only hope of maintaining that legacy is to buckle down, shore up the defense, and become a cup team. Besides, if Stoke can reach the FA Cup final, it can’t be that hard.
