Young
Dutch prospect, Gregory van der Wiel, is once again in the
sights of Valencia management. The exciting right back is close to the
end of his contract with Ajax and reports say he
is ready to move on to a larger stage. Van der Wiel has stated he will not
renew with Ajax, and there are many clubs lining up to get sign him, Valencia among them.
Valencia, however, may not be willing to take a
chance on a free signing when the contract offered may not stack against a
larger club’s like Chelsea and Man City, who are among those looking in to the transfer.
Instead, Valencia will opt to make the purchase during
the winter transfer window at a reduced price. Valencia made a similar maneuver
over the summer, making a transfer offer, but after
signing Victor Ruiz they couldn’t afford the Dutchman’s €10 million price tag.
Now, due to the impending expiration of the player’s contract, his market value
is closer to the €7-8 million range, a price Valencia will agree to as very reasonable. Provided Valencia can come up
with the funds and that other big clubs don’t come knocking, Valencia will be
considered favorites for van der Wiel’s signature.
I
personally hope that the VCF management can make this transfer a reality.
Miguel has to be on his way out, on account of disciplinary
and fitness issues, and Bruno is too old and washed up for this level of play.
This leaves VCF with only Barragan at right
back, but his injury history is well documented and
many would agree that he is not of sufficient quality or
health to automatically start for a club the size of Valencia. Barragan
is an excellent back-up, but a higher caliber of play
is needed to start. Ban Der Wiel could be a perfect fit. If Valencia can score this signing, it would be a massive boost to the club. Let us hope
for the best. Amunt!
