The strength of the Spanish La Liga has always been apparent, but now
even more say that it is indeed, the best in the world. In the last month La Liga has had quite a few
milestones. Just last Saturday, both
Lionel Messi of Barcelona and Christiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid scored their 41st
goals within La Liga. Messi scored a penalty kick in the second half against
Levante to win 2-1. Ronaldo put a header in the net to put Real Madrid in the
lead against Sporting Gijon. Both futbolistas just can’t seem to stop
spitting out the goals. When compared with the top goal scorer in the English
Premier League, Messi and Ronaldo easily win; the highest number of goals
scored in the Premier League is 27 according to ESPN.com.
Furthermore, both Real Madrid and Barcelona have advanced on to the
semifinals of the Champions League. Real
Madrid easily defeated Cypriot APOEL Nicosia with an aggregate score of 8-2,
and Barcelona defeated Milan with an aggregate score of 3-1. Madrid takes on
Bayern Munich and Barcelona faces Chelsea in the semifinals this Wednesday.
Both teams will have to work hard to win, but who wouldn’t want to see a
Spanish showdown in the finals?
Though it sometimes seems La Liga only consists of Real Madrid and Barcelona,
the other teams in La Liga are also proving their strength this season. The Spanish are dominating the Europa League,
with three out of the four teams in the semifinals from La Liga. Athletic
Bilbao, Atlético Madrid,
Valencia, and Sporting Lisbon have all advanced to the semifinals next week.
Additionally, Athletic Bilbao upset Manchester United in March, knocking them
out of the Europa League.
Many of the La Liga teams have been looking very strong as the season
begins to come to a close and as both the Europa League and the Champions
League approach their final stages. Many eagerly anticipate some significantly
entertaining football in the next two months. Then it will be more apparent if
the Spanish really are the best in the world!
