At last, at last. The day has arrived for the galáctico-squared match between LA
Galaxy and Real Madrid. This is not the
first time that the two clubs have faced one another. In fact, this will be their fourth meeting at
the Home Depot Center in Carson, Cal., with Los
Blancos have won all past matches (2005, 2-0; 2010, 3-2; 2011, 4-1).
This friendly is integral
for the sport's development within the United States in addition to the
financial health of the MLS. Indeed,
this club friendly has been greeted with wide network coverage. But why not?
Especially with stars Cristiano Ronaldo, Iker Casillas, David Beckham,
and Landon Donovan on pitch?
"It's always a game
that especially the young players look forward to because you com up against
some of the beset players and obviously one of the best managers in
football," said Beckham, who reunited with his teammates after
taking part in the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony. "The experience of playing in these
games is exceptional for the kids."
While the match could not
have come at a worse time for Galaxy – having it smashed in between matches
between FC Dallas and the Seattle Sounders – the players understand just how
big playing against Real Madrid is.
"There's never
really a good timing for these things," stated Donovan. "It always comes in the middle of the
season and in that way it's a little burdensome."
Galaxy will only be
playing one match in the World Football Challenge, while Madrid will have three
more matches to look forward to afterwards.
The WFC began in 2009 and is in its third year of running. The American galácticos played two matches in the competition the year before
against Manchester United and Real Madrid.
